"Genetic engineers don't make new genes, they rearrange existing ones."
   Thomas E. Lovejoy

What is it?

A genetically modified organism is one that has had its molecules and proteins chemically altered through any method.  Also refers to a change in the genetic material.

It can be done by incorporating genes from other organisms or by rearranging genes already present. There is no limit to alterations.

A genetically modified organism can also be called "transgenic" or transfer of genes.

How Genetic Engineering Works

Genetic engineering works by physically removing a gene from one organism and inserting it into another, giving it the ability to express the trait encoded by that gene. Like taking a single recipe out of a cookbook and placing it into another cookbook.
